In her brilliant Op-Ed piece -- Impounded Fathers -- Edwige Danticut describes the cruel and tragic results of the Department of Homeland
Security's immigration crackdow, cheekily titled Operation Return to
Sender. It has resulted in the separation of fathers and mothers from their American born kids. The goals of the operation, begun last spring, were to increase
the enforcement of immigration laws in the workplace and to catch and
deport criminals. Many women and men who have no criminal records have
found themselves in its cross hairs. More than 18,000 people have been
deported since the operation began last year.
Please read Impounded Fathers and weep for these people and for our once proud country. Alas, no more a haven.
Lest one think this is just an American phenomenon, you may want to see a 2002 Belgian film "Hop:"
"All young Justin (Kalomba Mbuyi) and his father want to do is sit down and enjoy watching a soccer game together. When this simple act sparks a chain of events leading to Justin running from the law, the boy must now embark on a thrilling adventure to reunite with his father. In order to fight the system, however, he must enlist the help of a former anarchist, and together they'll need to apply the secret of … the Hop." You can get it from Netflix.
