In these touching and emotionally raw poems by Jenn Brewer, we enter the life of a caregiver—one surrounded by a husband sick with a failing heart, his condition deteriorating rapidly and with certainty, his confrontation with a horrific disease and the transience of life stealing the fragile promise of a tomorrow. We are truly blessed that Jenn has shared her writings with us, writings that evoke a profound sense of empathy and compassion through unimaginable loneliness, loss, vulnerability, and fear. I ask that you read Jenn’s poems with love and concern, and bless her as she travels this most difficult journey. Paul Rousseau

Narcotics
Eager now for the needle,
the sweet, slow drip that obliterates the pain
--if only for awhile–
he lays his bones
against the sterile sheets,
submits to the sharp mercies of the nurse,
whose grin barely conceals
a reality as glaring
as the florescent lights overhead.
The worst is yet to come.
But not today.
Today, the liquid angels whisk him away,
a practice flight,
and I am left leaning against the wall,
the bitter edge of my own dark drug
searing my tongue.
