Our system of care has been developed to look at single diseases in isolation without consideration of other conditions and medications. As a result, seniors often take a medley of drugs that could interact with each other and other diseases in harmful ways. This is an invisible crisis for older adults.
The presenter, Dee Mangin, is a family physician in Family Medicine at McMaster University. She researches rational prescribing and polypharmacy. Dr. Mangin, a New Zealander, suffers (in her own words) from "irritable vowel syndrome;" but this does not detract from the importance of her presentation. In 8 minutes, she gives a lucid introduction to a topic that may well affect you, a family member or a patient.
