Marginal Notes: To Poets Unpublished

Cell2Soul—first the online journal, later the blog—was originally conceived by the editors in part to be a venue where struggling writers, artists and photographers could see their creative compositions appear in electronic print.  For decades, perhaps centuries, much artistic talent never saw the light of publishing day; mostly because the industry scrutinized what went into print—and was highly particular in its selections.

Brian T. Maurer has practiced pediatrics as a Physician Assistant for thirty years.  His "Marginal Notes" column appears periodically in the Cell2Soul Blog. The title "Marginal Notes" is taken from a quote by Henry David Thoreau: "I love a broad margin to my life."

Overtreated in America

Shannon Brownlee, a Schwartz Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation, gave two important talks at Williams College on October 10, 2007.  Her visit was sponsored by the Oakley Center for the Humanities and Social Sciences.  Brownlee's stories, essays, and opinion pieces about medicine and health care have appeared in such publications as The Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times Magazine, The New Republic, Slate, Time, Discover, BusinessWeek, Washington Monthly, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and The Wilson Quarterly.

The October 10th presentations focused on her important new book: "Overtreated:  How too much medicine is making us sicker and poorer."  Her talks addressed the overuse and misuse of drugs and medical technologies.  It is a more rounded and factual presentation of Michael Moore's health-care shockumentary "Sicko" -- with a proposed solution!

Cell 2 Soul is a quarterly online journal that celebrates and explores the many meanings of health and "dis-ease." It draws on the arts, the social sciences and the biological sciences. Rather than being an "expert system," it is designed to be a locus where professionals, patients and their families can meet on a level playing field. The journal provides us all with an opportunity to learn from each other as well as to teach.  The C2S blog is a natural outgrowth of C2S journal.

C2S Online Journal

Cell 2 Soul is a free. quarterly online journal that was first published in the winter of 2005.  Over the past two years, it has developed a following and the editors have decided to add this blog to allow more rapid publication of the pieces we receive.  We encourage our readers to submit pieces to the blog and to join as editors.  Please write to us if you are interested.
